Division Avenue Hosts 2008 LILT-NYSAFLT Regional ConferenceNovember 17, 2008
On Saturday November 15
th, 2008 Division Avenue High School hosted the Long Island Language Teachers-New York State Association of Foreign Language Teachers Regional Conference. This conference is held annually as a venue for professional development and networking for teachers of languages other than English. Over 450 teachers attended this year's conference whose title was: Teaching Languages to the igeneration? i am...ru? Twenty-three workshops were available this year ranging in topics from "Using the SMART Board in the World Language Classroom" to "Working with Special Needs Students in the ASL Classroom". Workshops were also offered for methods students and student teachers. World Language Teachers from a variety of schools across the island have volunteered their time and expertise to present workshops. How to use Movie Maker, Linda Dolecek, Acting AP at Division Ave. on
Using Teacher Tube and
PhotoStory, Jacqueline Farinon from MacArthur on
Surviving your First Years in Teaching, Stacey Humphreys from Wisdom Lane on
Learning Patterns in the LOTE Classroom and finally Tammy Green from Wisdom Lane on
Cultural Connections and e-pals. Textbook, Student Tour and teaching material companies exhibited their products as well.
Student volunteers Peter Calabrese, Angela Chiusano, John Ferrari, Andrea Gonzalez, Zuriel Loman, Victoria May, Kailey McGarvey, Samantha Ortuno, Emma Roseval, Grace Sharp and Brittany Stallone served as excellent ambassadors and guides as they assisted the participants in finding their way around the building.
This year's conference was co-chaired by Michele Ortiz, Chairperson of World Languages at Division Avenue High School, Linda Scalice Director of ESL, World Language and Dual Language for Bay Shore Public Schools, Diana Riccoboni from Smithtown High School West and Nancy Russo-Rumore, President of LILT.
