The Division Avenue High School marching band recently earned fifth place in the Small School 2 category at the 45th annual New York State Field Band Conference Championships at the Carrier Dome at Syracuse University. Their original of performance, "Frankenstein" earned them a score of 79.6.
The marching band competed against students from across New York State and were evaluated on their musical and visual presentation. With the guidance of band director Michael Bastone, the music that was composed for the show was written specifically for Division Avenue High School and completely original. Their movements during the performance evolved from Creation, Blind Love and Rampage.
The students began practicing their performance during the summer and have been supported by marching band leaders who have showed their hard work and determination throughout the season. This includes drum majors Grace Derrick and Ryan Alvarez, field majors Nicole Cheung and Joseph Novello, color guard captains Jenna Summer, Courtney Hakim and Ben Goldfeder, woodwind captain Michael Adams, brass captain Isabel Jaime, percussion captains Katherine Oswald and Brandon Smith and front ensemble captains Rashmika Beesam and Allison Ekberg.
"I cannot express in words how proud I am of the students of the marching band," said Bastone. "Their work ethic, determination and pride are the backbone of this ensemble. They have exceeded all of the staff's expectations and I cannot wait until next season. It's an honor to be their Director."
