Elementary Report Cards Update For Trimester 3

Reports cards have been a historically important communication link between teachers, students and parents. Although we are experiencing an unprecedented shift in the way we provide education, it is critical that we continue to provide feedback to families on the progress their children are making.

There are currently too many factors (student and family health, equity concerns, etc.) to accurately report mastery of standards at the elementary level. It is for these reasons that we will not use the typical 1-4 grading system; instead teachers will provide feedback only through narrative comments. These comments will provide feedback on the student's progress through the year as well as how the student participated in remote instruction.

Special area subject teachers (art, physical education, music, literacy center, and FLES) will only provide a comment code (Excellent, Satisfactory, Inconsistent, or Not Available) to provide feedback regarding student participation in our remote learning platform.

Dear Gardiners Avenue Families,

I hope everyone is doing well and staying safe during this difficult time. As you heard via a Connect-Ed message that was sent out last week, each building in the district has been developing plans for allowing families the opportunity to pick up their child's personal belongings since the closure of school has been extended to the end of the year.

In an effort to facilitate this process at Gardiners Avenue, we have developed a safe and manageable plan for our school to appropriately facilitate this. This week, your child's classroom teachers have gathered and bagged your child's belongings and will be available for you to pick those items up next week (the week of May 18th). The schedule and process are as follows:

  • Each class in grades K-5 has been assigned two different timeslots for you to come and collect your child's belongings. You may select either of the two designated times.

  • GRADES 3-5: Families for students in grades 3-5 will use the north circle driveway to collect their child's belongings.
  • GRADES K-2: Families for students in grades K-2 will use the south circle driveway to collect their child's belongings.
  • Upon entry to both locations, please pull up to the designated staff member at either location.
  • Please make sure to bring appropriate/valid ID with you.
  • Please do not get out of your car as designated staff members will place your child's belongings into your car through the window or trunk.
  • Students in Multiple Grades: Please pick up your older child's belongings first (north circle for grades 3-5) and then exit the north circle entrance / enter the south circle entrance to pick up your younger child's belongings (grades K-2) in the south circle.
  • If you have multiple children in varying grades/classes, you may pick up all of your children's personal belongings at the same time that coincides with one of your child's scheduled timeslots regardless of the designated pick up time for each class on the schedule noted above.
  • If someone other than a parent or guardian will be picking up your child's belongings, please email me directly indicating who will be claiming your child's belongings on your behalf.
  • For the safety of yourself and for our staff members, please maintain social distancing protocols and please wear a protective mask.
  • As always, please drive slowly/carefully being mindful of other vehicles/pedestrians and please refrain from double parking or blocking our neighbors' driveways.
  • Please note that if anyone in your family is sick/unwell, please do not come to the school. If you cannot come at the designated pickup time due to health related reasons, please contact me via email and you will be contacted with a different designated date/time to pick up your child's personal belongings.
  • Lastly, if your child is in possession of any school owned items (K-2 Book Baggies, library books, etc.) that you are not currently using/have finished using during our remote learning initiative, we will have bins at both the north circle and south circle for this purpose for you to return those items. We will have another designated date/time for families to return school owned items (textbooks, instruments, etc.) at a later date in the near future.

As you may have already heard, Governor Cuomo has extended the closure of schools through the end of the school year due to the current crisis. As you can imagine, we are deeply sadden by this news and hope that everyone is doing well and remaining safe during this challenging time.

As a result, we will be continuing with our remote learning initiative for the remainder of the school year. A district Connect-Ed message was sent out last week indicating that we will be enhancing our remote learning program with opportunities for live video interactions with our teachers.

For the week of May 4th, your child's teacher will reach out to you via Edmodo or may have already reached out to you via Edmodo for their first live interaction opportunity this week.

On Wednesday, May 6th, your child's teachers will post via Edmodo your child's new live video interaction schedule beginning next week, the week of May 11th. This will include special area dates/times as well. Once posted, please reach out to your child's teachers if you have any questions. Additional and more specific information will be available on Wednesday via Edmodo.

In addition, please review the Joining a Zoom Meeting - A Guide for Parents, Guardians and Students information, and more specifically the short elementary video tutorial, "Zoom Guidelines for Elementary Students" regarding remote learning live sessions.

Since the closure of schools has been extended for the remainder of the year, please know that we are developing plans for allowing students the opportunity to pick up their personal belongings in the near future. We'll reach out to you next week with additional information.

Lastly, we are also currently working on a variety of options for our 5th grade moving up ceremony for our 5th graders and should have more specific details in the coming weeks.
