A Message From the Principal

To the Members of the MacArthur Community:

Welcome to General Douglas MacArthur High School where we are proud of the tradition of excellence that has grown and developed over the years. Our students are consistently ranked high on academic standards on NYS Regents exams along with SAT scores in both Math and English which have surpassed both the State and National averages. With a graduation rate of 98%, a regents diploma rate of 96% (including 76% Advanced Regents Diplomas) from a graduating class of 367 students in 2011, MacArthur High School remains competitive with other high-ranking schools on Long Island, in the State and in the nation, recognized by both Newsweek and The Washington Post. Whether they are in the academic arena, on the athletic fields, or performing community service, our students continue to make us very proud. An integral part of this success is the support that we receive from parents and guardians, for, working together, we are a very effective team that can help our students to prepare for their futures while enjoying their high school experience today.

For the upcoming 2011-2012 school year:

Orientation for the Class of 2015 and new students will be held according to the following schedule:

Parents only: Wednesday, August 31 at 7 P.M.

Students only: Thursday, September 1 at 9 A.M.

We also look forward to meeting you at Back to School Night which will be held on Thursday, September 22 beginning at 7 p.m. Please note that all classes will begin promptly at 7 p.m. and will end at 9 P.M. During those abbreviated periods you will have an opportunity to meet with your child’s teachers who will explain the curriculum and their expectations for the course. We know that you will find it very informative and helpful as you assist your child in navigating the school year.

As part of an active and vibrant high school today, we are committed to helping students to achieve academic progress, along with the development of skills necessary for tomorrow’s world – the abilities to co-exist with others, to enhance career skills and to meet the ever-changing demands of technology. Along with our academic offerings, which include an array of AP and College-level courses, as well as courses designed to provide extra support for students experiencing difficulty, a wide range of activities from music and drama to athletics to clubs and honor societies are at your child’s disposal. We encourage all students to become involved in after-school activities that can enrich their high school experience.

We welcome both inquiries and input, and our doors are always open to students and parents alike. We hope to see you at one of our school functions, and we look forward to working with you.

Sincerely,
Kathleen Valentino
Principal
