MacArthur Freshmen Go Fishing Research Style
Six MacArthur science research freshmen, Lisa Steinberg, NaeelQuasem, Julianne Magliano, Emily Zhang, Isabel Galella, and NicholasBonavita attended Alewife (River Herring) Survey Training with Dr. Friedman at the Rockville Centre Public Library on February 28th. The students spent the evening learning about Long Island's geologic history and the ecological importance of its freshwater streams. They then learned how to identify various organisms, in particular, river herring. The student researchers will take part in a citizen scientist project to map river runs of these diadromous fish through Seatuck Environmental Association and New York State Department of Environmental Conservation.
