Members of the Division Avenue High School competitive marching band geared up for its 2019-2020 season with a week-long recreational marching band camp from Aug. 5-9. The camp, which was held on the field of Levittown Memorial Education Center, marks the start of the season for the marching band each year.
Facilitated by Division Avenue band director Michael Bastone and assistant director Ken Vignona, the week-long camp helped the Division Avenue High School and General Douglas MacArthur High School student-musicians prepare for competition season by practicing material and proper footwork. At the conclusion of the week, the students performed for family and friends.
Student-musicians in the marching band's pit ensemble worked closely with music teacher Matt Nobile and drumline instructor Nicholas Hall on their sound, while drum majors and incoming seniors Julia Gizzo and Laura Watson conducted the marching band outside on a pedestal. Color guard captains and incoming seniors Rhythm Osan and Anabella Rubio also helped lead the color guard with flag and rifle technique.
"It feels really good to give something back to the band," said Julia. "It's awesome to see how everyone looks from a different perspective this year. Everyone is ready and is pushing through."
This year, the marching band will perform an original score titled "In My Reflection." The first competition of the season will be in Brentwood on Sept. 15 and the season will continue to the end of October, where it will conclude with a judged performance at the New York State Field Band Conference Finals in the Carrier Dome at Syracuse University.
