Division Avenue High School seniors Anabella Rubio and Abel Varghese, along with junior Christopher Smith, participated in university programs this summer to further their academic interests. Anabella attended George Mason University's Envision Law Program, Abel conducted math research at Hofstra University's Summer Science Research Program and Christopher participated in a precollege medical program at Adelphi University.

Anabella attended the George Mason University Envision Law Program from July 21-26 in Washington, DC. During the five-day workshop, she visited the Fairfax County Courthouses where she observed proceedings and participated in a mock trial murder case, acting as a Defense Attorney leading the cross-examination. Anabella spoke with various guest speakers from the law profession and also visited the Supreme Court. She found the workshop exciting and interesting, as she wants to pursue a career in law.

Abel continued his passion for mathematics during Hofstra University's Summer Science Research Program. While working with another high school student and a Hofstra professor, he conducted math research on a problem that was posed by a mathematician. Using computers to experiment matrices, Abel and his team researched a specific property. Together, they created a poster of their research and will be presenting it to teachers and parents on Sept. 25.

Christopher attended a week-long medical program at Adelphi University. Here, he learned many different aspects of the medical field. Christopher was able to observe the cyber knife at work and had professors who taught physics, chemistry and biology. Almost every day he visited New York University Winthrop Hospital and learned topics such as sports medicine, treatment for cancer and how to treat injured patients. Christopher was also CPR trained and is now certified. On the final day, he learned how to suture a patient by using oranges.

"I was amazed with how they made replicas of bones using a 3D printer and carbon fiber," Christopher said. "This program opened up my eyes to the many options in the medical field but as of now I wish to pursue a career in anesthesiology."
