Sophomores Lindsey Barr and Erin Lung were accepted to attend the Perry Outreach Program at UCONN Health, in Farmington Connecticut. Despite the increasing number of women entering medical and graduate school, women make up only 6.1% of fully accredited practicing orthopedic surgeons according to 2014 survey by American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons. In addition, only 12.4% of the faculty at engineering schools are women, with that percentage being lower for mechanical engineering. This program seeks to expose young women to the world of biomedical engineering and orthopedic surgery. On November 2nd, the students attended workshops and mock surgeries related to: spinal fusion, torn meniscus repair, fracture repair, external fixation, and suturing. A lecture was also given by an orthopedic surgeon and sports medicine specialist, Dr. K. Coyner.
