Elementary school students throughout the district will have access to free and enjoyable books year-round with the district's new lending libraries. These beautifully decorated wooden boxes outside the school buildings will hold books that students can access at all times and allow them to add their own books for others to enjoy.
Abbey Lane, Gardiners Avenue, East Broadway, Lee Road, Northside and Summit Lane elementary schools recently held ribbon cutting ceremonies where central administrators, board members, students and staff gathered to celebrate their school's new addition. Director of Elementary Education Michelle Kelly and the district's literacy collaborative group wanted to add a lending library to each elementary building this year to help encourage students to read outside of school. According to Ms. Kelly, the act of reading connects students to other readers in a meaningful way.
"Students will be able to borrow books and return them to the lending libraries that are located outside of each of our elementary buildings," she said. "It is our hope that students will fall in love with an author or genre of book, or even connect to a character ?" which will instill a love for reading. We hope these books provide time for families to create memories of reading together while developing their children's imaginations and knowledge."
