Five MacArthur Science Research Students Named Finalists In Prestigious Junior Scientists And Young Explorers Meta Competition
We are proud to announce that five outstanding students - Alden Sykora, Allyssa Aquino, Annabelle LaRosa, Gianna Vu, and Saahir Afraz - have been selected as finalists in the highly competitive Junior Scientists and Young Explorers Meta (JYEM) Competition. The event, hosted by faculty and alumni from top-tier universities, recognizes young minds who embody the spirit of exploration through scholarly and creative inquiry. Each finalist demonstrated exceptional curiosity, originality, and a commitment to delving deeply into thought-provoking topics that embrace the core values of the JYEM: open-ended discovery, innovative thinking, and intellectual adventure.
Each of the five finalists explored a unique and compelling topic that reflects their curiosity and dedication to scholarly inquiry. Saahir investigated cyberchondria in adolescents, analyzing how excessive online health searches may heighten anxiety in teens. Allyssa focused on LGBT+ perceptions in U.S. and Filipino communities, examining cultural influences on acceptance and identity expression across both societies. Gianna conducted a study on the impacts of various classical music genres on students' math and reading scores, revealing potential cognitive benefits linked to musical exposure. Anabelle explored the relationship between birth order and perceived parental academic involvement, offering insights into how sibling dynamics may influence educational support. Lastly, Alden examined authenticity and well-being among introverted and extroverted students during the college admissions process, shedding light on how personality traits affect self-expression and stress during a critical life transition.
In addition to being named a finalist, Saahir achieved a remarkable milestone by advancing to the Top 50 international ranking! This honor earned him an exclusive invitation to present his work at the JYEM Expo this August. The competition encourages an explorative mindset?valuing the journey of questioning and learning over immediate answers?and these students exemplify that ideal. Their recognition highlights their individual achievement and underscores the importance of nurturing inquisitive, exploratory thinking.
