MacArthur Students Participate In Science and Research For Awareness Series at Stony Brook University
MacArthur High School's future leaders, Ava Collins and Danielle Herrera, participated in the Science and Research for Awareness Series (SARAS) at Stony Brook University from July 7-25, 2025. The highly regarded three-week program brings together world-class experts, educators, and students for immersive exploration in science, medicine, and healthcare innovation.
Each day of SARAS features a dynamic mix of lectures, interactive workshops, and networking opportunities with professionals in the field. Students engage with a wide range of topics including emergency medicine, regenerative medicine, robotic surgery, orthopedic care, vascular health, clinical informatics, and mental health. Participants also receive specialized training in laboratory safety, CPR, trauma care, biomedical research, and professional development such as career guidance and test preparation.
Danielle reflected on her experience, noting, "During SARAS there are so many opportunities to make new friends and network with doctors and specialists. One of the most memorable things was using dummies that medical students use and learning how to intubate adults and infants."
Ava shared a similar sentiment, adding, "Going into the program, I wasn't sure of what profession or field I wanted to explore, but this program gave me so much insight into fields I didn't even know about. I was also given the opportunity to speak with working medical professionals and do hands-on activities relating to various fields. I received opportunities I wouldn't have been able to get anywhere else and I overall am so grateful for the experience and the connections I made from SARAS."
Through their participation in SARAS, both Ava and Danielle gained invaluable hands-on experience, professional connections, and a deeper understanding of potential future pathways in healthcare and biomedical sciences.
