The Social Studies Department
The Social Studies Department is committed to developing informed, thoughtful, and engaged citizens through instruction aligned with the New York State Social Studies Framework. Our curriculum emphasizes historical thinking, inquiry, civic participation, and the analysis of multiple perspectives across local, national, and global contexts. Students build strong foundations in history, geography, economics, and civics while developing critical reading, writing, discussion, and research skills. Throughout all grade levels, learning is driven by essential questions, primary and secondary sources, and real-world connections that prepare students to understand the past and actively participate in today's democratic society.
At the secondary level, students have access to a wide range of opportunities that support diverse interests and postsecondary goals. These include multiple Advanced Placement (AP) courses, college-level dual enrollment offerings, and a variety of elective courses that allow students to explore specialized topics in greater depth. The department also supports students in earning the New York State Seal of Civic Readiness, which recognizes achievement in civic knowledge, skills, and engagement through coursework, assessments, and civic action experiences. Collectively, these offerings challenge students academically while fostering civic responsibility, college and career readiness, and lifelong engagement in their communities.
