The Levittown Public Schools World Language and English as a New Language (ENL) Departments are committed to developing multilingual, culturally responsive, and globally minded learners. Through high-quality language instruction and meaningful cultural experiences, students build the communication skills necessary for success in school, college, careers, and an increasingly interconnected world.
World Language Department
Our Mission
The World Language Department provides students with the opportunity to develop proficiency in languages other than English while fostering an appreciation for diverse cultures and perspectives. Language learning strengthens communication, critical thinking, collaboration, and cultural understanding, preparing students to become confident global citizens.
Department Goals
- Develop students' ability to communicate effectively in another language.
- Promote intercultural understanding and respect for diverse cultures and traditions.
- Build listening, speaking, reading, and writing skills through meaningful, real-world communication.
- Encourage lifelong language learning and global awareness.
- Prepare students for advanced coursework, the New York State Seal of Biliteracy, college, and future careers.
New York State Requirements
New York State requires students to earn one unit of credit in a World Language to receive a Regents Diploma. This requirement is often fulfilled by:
- Successfully completing the middle school World Language sequence and passing the locally developed Checkpoint A assessment, (must pass the class and final to earn the credit) or
- Completing one year of high school World Language study aligned with Checkpoint A.
Students pursuing a Regents Diploma with Advanced Designation successfully complete an additional two units of study in the same language (three total credits) and successfully complete the locally developed Checkpoint B assessment. (New York State Education Department)
English as a New Language (ENL) Department
Our Mission
The ENL Department supports multilingual learners as they develop academic English proficiency while continuing to value and build upon their home languages and cultures. Our program provides equitable access to rigorous instruction and empowers students to succeed academically, socially, and emotionally.
Department Goals
- Develop English language proficiency in listening, speaking, reading, and writing.
- Support academic success across all content areas.
- Foster confidence and independence in multilingual learners.
- Celebrate linguistic and cultural diversity.
- Partner with families to ensure student success.
- Prepare students to become bilingual, biliterate, and college- and career-ready.
ENL Services
Students who qualify for ENL services receive instruction based on their English language proficiency level as determined by New York State assessments. Instruction may include:
- Stand-alone ENL instruction focused on English language development.
- Integrated ENL instruction, where an ENL teacher collaborates with classroom teachers to support language development within academic content.
- Ongoing assessment and individualized support as students progress toward English proficiency.
Students are assessed annually using the WIDA Access exam until they demonstrate English proficiency. Services are provided in accordance with New York State Education Department requirements. (New York State Education Department)
