A Message From the Principal

Research shows that there is a very definite connection between a parent's involvement in their child's learning and success in school. It's important to get involved in the early years of your child's education and stay involved.

There are a number of things parents can do at home and at school in order to help their children learn the skills necessary for success.

At Home:
  • Ask questions about the things your children are learning and encourage them to elaborate.
  • Keep books, magazines and newspapers in your home and make sure your child sees you using them.
  • Keep papers, pencils, crayons and markers handy in order to encourage writing as a form of expression.
  • Watch television with your child. Limit viewing time and discuss what you watch together.
  • Have a "special" place for studying that is quiet and without distractions.
  • Have high expectations for your child. Encourage them for working hard and for jobs well done.

At School:

  • Share information with teachers so you both know what is happening at school and at home.
  • Make your child's special needs known.
  • Work with your child's teacher as a partner in order to help your child want to learn, gain self-confidence and succeed in school.

There are many activities and games that your child's teacher can suggest that will promote success in school. At this elementary school level, these activities should center around the following skills:

  • Listening to directions
  • Being organized
  • Encouraging children to be self-reliant
  • Teaching children how to plan out projects and the time needed for these.
