Review The Agenda

Board of Education Overview

The Levittown Board of Education consists of seven community residents who are elected to serve three-year terms as representatives of the public in all matters concerning the school district.

As a Union Free School District, the Board's authority and responsibilities are defined by the New York State Education Law, including Articles 33, 35, 37, 51, and 53, as well as other applicable federal and state laws and regulations. In general, the Board has full superintendence, management, and control of the district's educational affairs and holds all powers necessary to carry out these duties as provided by New York State law and the Commissioner of Education. Board of Education trustees are volunteers. They do not receive any compensation and they pay taxes at the regular rate.

Public Meeting Information

The Board of Education typically meets twice each month on the second and fourth Wednesdays in the Large Board Room at Levittown Memorial. Meetings begin at 6:00 p.m. with an executive session to discuss negotiations and other confidential matters. The public session begins at approximately 7:30 p.m.

"Public Be Heard" is offered during each "regular" Board of Education meeting on any topic related to the school district. During a "special meeting," topics must be on agenda items only. There is no "Public Be Heard" during a planning session. Public participation shall be limited to Levittown School District residents only or persons invited to participate by the Board of Education.

Community members who wish to address the Board must notify the Board President before the meeting by completing the district-provided form prior to the start of the meeting at 7:30pm. The form requires the speaker's name, address, and a brief description of the topic to be presented. Each speaker is allotted up to three minutes. Public input and questions are considered in accordance with Board procedures and are addressed within reasonable timeframes.

More details regarding public participation in Board of Education meetings can be found in Policy 1512.

Chain of Communication

The Levittown School District's communication protocol helps to promote direct, open and respectful interactions so that problems and concerns can be worked out quickly and efficiently. The communication protocol starts with the staff member closest to the situation, as that person will usually have the most information. At times, additional personnel are required to resolve specific situations. Appropriate communication channels for a variety of topics are listed below. The district encourages any and all questions from parents and residents regarding school matters. While most questions or concerns will be addressed within 24 hours, please allow up to 48 hours for a response. More information regarding the district's chain of communication can be found in Policy 4210 and in the District Calendar mailed each summer.

Who should I contact if I have a question?
